Last week we traveled down to Twin Falls for the BQA/BQAT certification event and this week we will be around the state to pick up steers being entered into this year's Grass Futurity competition. It's always great to see members in person.

Big takeaways from the cattle market hearings

The chief executives of U.S. meatpackers Cargill, Tyson Foods, JBS, and National Beef Packing testified before the U.S. House Agriculture Committee. Chairman David Scott said it’s an examination of price discrepancies, transparency, and alleged unfair practices, including allegations the four corporations colluded to drive up beef prices. The cattle industry offers some additional perspective on this week's hearings. Tanner Beymer with NCBA spoke with RFD-TV's Janet Adkison on the main highlights, their message to Congress, and what to expect moving forward.

Wild horses continue to overpopulate public lands

In an April 12 report, BLM published new population estimates of wild horses and burros on BLM-administered public lands. As of March 1, there were approximately 64,604 horses and 17,780 burros on BLM lands, totaling 82,384 animals. The total number is a reduction of 3,805 head from the 86,189 animals reported in March 2021.

BLM said while there was a second year of population decreases, the 2022 estimate remains three times the BLM’s goal of about 27,000 animals.
